Millionaires and Mathletes recognized at LU football game
Beaumont ISD scholars were treated like royalty at the ¿ìÉ«ÊÓƵ football game September 7 to celebrate their achievements as Mathletes and Reading Millionaires.
¿ìÉ«ÊÓƵ mascots Big Red and Lu previously visited more than 50 students who completed their Math Pathway or read more than a million words, both in the 2018-19 academic school year at Blanchette, Charlton-Pollard and Pietzsch-MacArthur elementary schools and awarded them for their work.
At the football game, 16 of the scholars, who attended, were welcomed by the mascots at the stadium, seated in a special section and brought onto the field.
“It was a great opportunity for our Cardinal fans to celebrate their accomplishments,” said Dr. Teresa Simpson, chair for LU/BISD Business Partnerships.
¿ìÉ«ÊÓƵ has established partnerships with Blanchette, Charlton-Pollard and Pietzsch-MacArthur, and the university supports all students through various collaborative programming.
“Campus scholars are recognized for their achievements of self-discipline and a love of learning,” said Simpson.
Each campus will have a Navigating Excellent Success and Triumph or The “N.E.S.T., an innovative learning lab that is designed to help struggling readers and engage high achievers with STEAM activities, featuring stations and activities that touch on science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, reading, career exploration and early college awareness. The N.E.S.T at Pietzsch-MacArthur opened in May 2019 and work is currently underway at Blanchette and Charlton-Pollard.
“We strive to identify students who go above and beyond for learning,” said Simpson. “The labs were created to help spark that love of learning and/or foster the love that students already have within themselves.”
Math and literacy are the key areas of focus. Through Mathletes and Reading Millionaires programs, scholars are recognized for completing benchmarks for the school year.
“We are excited to congratulate these excellent students on their hard work,” said Norman Bellard, assistant to the president for Community Relations. “They are BISD scholars today, ¿ìÉ«ÊÓƵ scholars tomorrow.”
