The award was given to recognize a student group that has achieved significant success in their first year of existence.

“Through recruiting, community outreach and cultural celebrations, the Hispanic Society has done an outstanding job since starting in September 2020,” said Todd Shaver, executive director of the Setzer Student Center and Recreational Sports. “They now have 175 members and are consistently recruiting members from all backgrounds and cultures.”

The Hispanic Society was commended for completing 60 hours of community service, even during the pandemic, and honored for its mission to create a diverse setting that recognizes all cultures and peoples of Hispanic descent. The organization offers the opportunity for the Hispanic students at LU to express themselves and develop the Hispanic community at LU. They also establish a welcoming atmosphere for members to meet and discuss social issues, network with like-minded students and provide support for people with similar backgrounds.

“This organization has a bright future ahead, serving LU and the Southeast Texas community,” said Shaver.
